Guest Blogger inspired to share her insight on staying positive
One of my favorite bloggers, Lisa Sullivan, wrote the following blog post today after being inspired by one of those email quote blasts we both get everyday. Enjoy her insight and check out her movie blog! Thanks Lisa!
“I live by this credo: Have a little laugh at life and look around you for happine
With the holiday season we just had, this quote just fits and would work for your blog. Here’s my entry if you’d like to use it –
Famed actor, Red Skelton, had this to say once, “I live by this credo: Have a little laugh at life and look around you for happiness instead of sadness. Laughter has always brought me out of unhappy situations. Even in your darkest moment, you usually can find something to laugh about if you try hard enough.”
I think Red was on to something here. Think about it. If we all went through life dwelling on the negativity, the “what ifs”, the sadness, what have you, we’d all be white as ghosts since our natural complexion will have given way to symptoms of depression, we’d lose any energy we have on a daily basis, we’d walk around with a frown that no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t “turn upside down”. In other words, we’d all live a very unhappy life…and who wants that?!
Some would say, “but it’s hard sometimes, Lisa.” Sure it is! Perhaps a loved one has passed away recently, was diagnosed with Cancer, lost a job due to downsizing, was just sent to war. I could go on and on. The thing is you have a choice – dwell on the negative or rise above it. Find something positive amongst the sadness.
A little personal story here and perhaps this will put Red’s thoughts into perspective. Just this holiday season my family went through some pretty difficult situations. Between having to figure out a “plan B” for a place for my husband, myself, and my dog to stay to dealing with an older relative going through dementia to finding out my mother has breast cancer to caring for a brother-in-law with food poisoning…and all within about a 5-day span…it appears to not have been a “happy” holiday for us. Oh but it was.
“Plan B” was my sister and her family opening their home to all three of us, decisions are being made on behalf of the older relative, my mother’s breast cancer diagnosis indicates that it was caught early and is very treatable, and my brother-in-law has fully recovered from his battle with food poisoning. I spent more time with my sister and her family than I think I ever have. My nephews and I bonded and I now miss them more than I ever have. While the older relative is suffering from dementia, we still got together as a family on Christmas Eve and laughed over the oversized red flannel shirt he received as a Christmas gift. We even discovered that the brother-in-law who suffered from food poisoning is on Facebook and laughed over his silly profile pictures. And the dog…well, every time she hopped around in the snow, it gave all of us a chuckle, a reason to laugh.
You see, even amongst the sadness, there is always laughter. No matter what you are going through today, may you find a reason to smile, a reason to laugh. It’ll brighten your day. That I promise you.
