Do you believe?

Mason's first visit with Santa

Mason

“Believe in love. Believe in magic.  Hell, believe in Santa Clause. Believe in others.  Believe in yourself. Believe in your dreams.  If you don’t, who will?” -Jon Bon Jovi

Have you seen those signs to decorate your house with that say “Believe?”  I think they are more of a holiday motif to decorate your home with during the season.  However, mine stays out all year long as a reminder to me!

I chose Jon Bon Jovi’s quote (who I also LOOOOVE!!!)  because it confirms my belief that your life can change dramatically by simply expecting the best in all you encounter.  It is your personal responsibility to set the stage for the best to happen.  Sometimes this means keeping optimistic that others will do the right thing…sometimes it means you doing the right thing-even when it’s not the easiest choice to make.

As I approach my son’s first Christmas, the choice to teach my son to believe in Santa Clause has been controversial.  I have had people tell me it is “lying” to your children or setting them up for disappointment when they find out the truth.  Being the ultimate optimist and growing up believing (but being suspicios that my parents were somehow involved) of Santa, it was never a question that I would teach my son to believe.

I will teach him it’s much more than the red suit guy bringing you presents…its about the magic and goodness that surrounds us during the holiday season.  It’s about believing in the best of people and fulfilling the belief others have in you.  It’s about remembering not to limit it to the month of December-but it should extend throughout the entire year.  It is a way of life!

I just saw a commercial for Toys for Tots in which a child asks a Marine if he is Santa.  The marine doesn’t answer because he is guarding an area-but when the boys hands him his list, he opens his white gloved hand and accepts it.  The little boy walks away saying, “He is Santa!”

So, this holiday season I encourage you to believe in others and yourself.

I absolutely believe…in the goodness of people and in the message the holiday season brings. If I am ever so blessed to have children, I will teach mine the same as you. Always thought I would even if my parents did have a little something to do with Santa’s visits. ;)
