Choices

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -Joanne Kathleen Rowlings

I chose this picture of my husband choosing one of our 4 Christmas trees (2 fake, 2 real).  This is the Charlie Brown tree for our dog Sophie-it has all her decorations on it-don’t ask :)  We visited the Farmer’s Market two weeks ago to pick out our trees-it was a special weekend since it’s my son’s first Christmas.   There were so many to pick from!!!  After awhile, they all started looking the same and I was growing impatient.  I kept saying to my husband…just choose one!

So, we ended up choosing a nice 8 foot tree and this small one.  It got me thinking about choices we make everyday-how hard they can be and what they symbolize.

There are easy choices (like picking out a tree) and hard choices (like a major life decisions).  When faced with the tough ones, I like to make a list of pro’s and con’s…then weigh them to make an educated decision.  Of course, sometimes emotions (I am only human) do play a factor but I do try to stay realistic.   Also, an important lesson I have learned is to slow down and take a breath before making a choice.  Actually think about it instead of rushing to make that decision.

In our current personal and business environment people are being forced to make very difficult decisions.  Which bill to pay, job to pursue in fear of job cuts or who to cut off their gift list this year.  These decisions are never easy but they do speak to one’s character.

Doing the right thing is a choice we make.  Doing the right thing is not a skill we learn…it is our ability to make a choice that is appropriate.  While on maternity leave, I was watching my favorite (Oprah) and Marian Joneswas the guest.  She spoke about her lying about steroid use and her time spent in jail.  It really struck me how she kept saying that in a split minute when the authorities asked her if she had taken this specific substance…she had to make an immediate choice on how to answer.  She lied and said no.  She says if she had taken a moment to compose herself and discuss with her attorneys, she probably would have been truthful.  But, at that split second she made the choice to lie. And, now has paid her dues by serving time in prison away from her family for that choice.

Had to make tough choices?  Regret a few (we all have)? Please share your wisdom.
